So, Lyall is a werewolf, which means he has a supernaturally heightened sense of smell! His nose is acknowledged in canon to be exceptionally good as well. All of which is to say, he's able to smell things that normal people might not be able to (for example, vampires in his world smell like old blood to him, other werewolves smell like fur even in human form etc.) This is just to gather information on what he might be able to pick up on a character!
